Therapeutic Nature: Van Gogh's Art and the Hospital Garden
by Getty Museum

Science and art merged in Getty Museum’s documentary Therapeutic Nature: Van Gogh’s Art and the Hospital Garden. After Van Gogh’s admission to Saint-Rémy Hospital in France, Dr. Peryon asked if he would like to paint—a revolutionary psychiatric approach in 1889. The next morning, he was in the garden, painting what would become one of his most famous works, Irises. In the short film, Getty Museum used scientific analysis to discover that the irises were originally painted violet, not blue, after the original red pigment faded over the past 130 years. Their documentary goes beyond the brushstrokes and explores the innovative thinking that pioneered art therapy, winning Getty Museum the 2025 Award of Excellence – Film & Video: Arts & Culture.
