What led you to your current work?
I took a non-traditional path, and my experiences have contributed to a richer and more comprehensive creative background. My first job related to design was with a financial marketing company, where I created marketing communication materials and learned the intricacies of the printing industry to achieve my desired creative outcomes. From there, I transitioned into branding, logo development, and visual design for boutique studios and agencies.
Over time, my role evolved to include art direction for photoshoots and leading cross-functional creative teams. As I sought ways to use customer research and insights to support both creative and business decisions, focusing on UX/CX was a natural progression. This led me to concentrate on experience and product design leadership, leveraging the power of design and technology to drive meaningful change. It’s an ongoing journey, and each stepping stone has played a crucial role in shaping me into the design leader I am today.
What was a milestone project for you?
Early in my career, I had the incredible opportunity to art direct two international photoshoots in Italy. It was a life-changing experience, as I had never traveled abroad before. Leading a cross-functional team on location to deliver outstanding client work was rewarding and challenging. In just a few weeks, I experienced significant growth in my leadership, relationship-building, design, and improvisational skills. It’s an experience I will never forget, and I draw from what I learned to this day.
What’s something you wish you knew when you first started your career?
One thing I wish I had known at the beginning of my career is that finding fulfillment and satisfaction in your work depends significantly on two key factors:
- Doing what you truly enjoy.
- Having a supportive manager.
While it’s tempting to chase fancy titles, high-profile companies for your resume, and larger paychecks, these things won’t necessarily bring you happiness and often don’t last long. Instead, focus on the work you are passionate about and surround yourself with a great team and a supportive manager. This way, you can experience meaningful career growth while genuinely looking forward to each new week and avoid the dreaded Sunday scaries.
How do you unwind from work mode?
Movement is medicine. It’s one of the few things that will turn off the work track in my head. I carve out time to work out several times a week. My current workout of choice is spin cycle classes and strength/weight training. Over the years, I’ve also dabbled in kickboxing, tennis, and pilates. No matter what mode of exercise you choose, it’s essential for both the mind and body, helping you bring your best self to work every day.
This year, The Communicator Awards is celebrating connection in all forms of communication. What’s the key to building a strong connection with your team?
I lead diverse, distributed teams across the globe, and I believe that building rapport starts with taking an interest in both the person and the professional. This process begins with effective communication—asking questions and learning about what matters to someone, including their shared interests and career goals. I like to spend the first few minutes of team syncs sharing personal anecdotes and stories before diving into the agenda. Demonstrating genuine interest in others fosters rapport and enhances team synergy.
