Curating Black Visual Culture: The Making of an Exhibition
by CommAgency

Rare archives of photos, illustrations, and books tell snippets of a culture’s story. Curators shape the complete narrative. CommAgency’s student-run team and Penn State Director Catie Grant pulled back the curtain in their documentary about the curation of the college’s library exhibit about black visual culture. Their biggest challenge? There were several — not just creative ones. Read on to see how they brought the client’s vision to life and won the 2024 Award of Excellence for Film & Video in three categories: Student, Educational Institutions, and Diversity, Equity & Inclusion.

There are some great cutaways to old photographs, illustrations and excerpts from books. Did the library give you special access to the archive?
Student Team: The library, through Adisa and Brittany, gave us access to everything you saw and more. Adisa and Brittany had specific things they really wanted to highlight, but some were things we saw that caught our eye and they were able to tell us the history behind each piece. It was an incredible experience to get access to everything!

All of those things lead to creative success, because CommAgency is a professional learning experience – we want the students to feel comfortable trying, failing, and growing while understanding that – at the end of the day – this is still a professional project and the client is paying us to deliver at a high level.
